State and local government agencies are challenged to execute many of the same initiatives as the federal government. Cloud computing. Cyber security. Mobility. Big data. And they face similar challenges. Limited financial and IT resources. Aging, proprietary infrastructures that leave little opportunity to take advantage of new, best-of-breed solutions. Plus the hurdle of procurement procedures. With limited resources to create new RFPs, it’s often easier to work with vendors that are already on multiple contracting vehicles.
We’re very familiar with these challenges. And we’re ideally positioned to help state and local government agencies meet their infrastructure needs within the bounds of procurement requirements.
An open, software-enabled foundation
Government employees who still rely on outdated technologies such as faxing are well aware of the value that a modernized infrastructure can provide. But with resources scarce, IT administrators want to make sure that infrastructure spending goes beyond a purchase that meets today’s needs. They want an investment that will provide value for the long term.
We believe that an open, software-enabled environment should be the basis for any modern network infrastructure, whether it will be used in the public or private sector. Open standards-based products allow choices from an ecosystem of vendors that are keeping pace with innovation. And an agile, software-enabled infrastructure is the clear choice for a network foundation that can cost-effectively meet changing needs while adhering to security policies. This approach to networking is commonly known as the New IP.
The hardware infrastructure of our New IP network is based on the Brocade VCS Fabric technology, which is embedded in every Brocade VDX switch. Its zero-touch provisioning feature lets you add switches simply by plugging them in, anywhere in the network. The new switch immediately becomes part of the fabric, automatically provisioned and centrally managed. This integrated infrastructure supports SDN and virtualized environments at Layer 2 and Layer 3.
Our logical overlay topology for the New IP is built on virtualized products for routing, load balancing, application delivery, and visibility and analytics. It also includes the first commercial edition of the OpenDaylight controller, which is the leading open source SDN controller.
We had Cisco technology, but it needed an upgrade and SMARTnet was expensive. We needed bandwidth-intensive equipment, and Brocade offered us a solution with better reliability, increased performance, and a higher ROI. We didn’t realize what we were missing before in terms of service possibilities. Now for whatever we can imagine, Brocade can help us make it a reality.
Transitioning from a static, proprietary, hardware-centric architecture to the New IP is a significant undertaking. But we can ease the transition. Both the physical and logical network layers support a your-pace, your-way migration. You can add switches and implement virtualized resources as needed, and as budget allows. We even let you run SDN and traditional networking flows on the same port at the same time to ease your transition to SDN.
We also provide a unique pay-as-you-go acquisition model that lets you increase or decrease network capacity without long-term commitments. It’s called Brocade Network Subscription, and many government agencies take advantage of this option to adjust purchases to technology needs and budget availability.
To ease the procurement process, we are heavily invested in contract vehicle coverage, with multiple Consortium and Statewide Contracts. We put a lot of effort into maintaining our contract coverage. And we believe that our broad contract vehicle landscape demonstrates our commitment to the state and local government market and differentiates us from other vendors.
